Not quite. php works fine with apache. It just won't interface with mysql which means that I can't use php for dynamic web database driven applications like I want to. Do you know what to change in the .ini file for that? Also, how do I know where the php.ini file is that I should edit?

I finally figured out how to start mysql from the command line and was reading up on setting up users for remote access to the server part of it. I was just playing with it locally. I like it.

is php not working with everything because it claims it was installed without
mysql? if so, i know that you need to go into the php.ini file, and uncomment a line
in there that references mysql... i think there might have been another step,
but i don't remember what it is... i don't know about the cygwin question...

I have ...

php and apache running just fine together. I want to get mysql to work though and I installed it after. I see that php and ssl and perl modules are loaded but how do I get mysql in there. I tried to manually put in ld(mysql.so) but to no avail. I am somewhat hesitant to remove all that I have installed and then not have something that works. Now that I've installed from source rpms once, that's not a big deal. I just read some lamp install stuff off the web. Should I just install that. I downloaded it not too long ago.

I think I have 2 versions of mozilla installed and I don't want any conflicts if I install lamp over the old versions of apache, php, and mysql.

A main question as well is whether if I uninstall apache, etc whether /var/www/html will be deleted and I'll lose all that I've put there. Do I want to uninstall and then install lamp?

My roomate has a WinXP box with cygwin. He can ssh in and get a command prompt but can't run startx. It says he doesn't have console privileges, but he has a username and password and even a home directory on my box. He'd like to get an X server connection. I told him to try ssh -X but that hasn't worked. Any other ideas?

Thanks
