Thanks everyone for all your help. Just started working.

First, make sure you have the usb-storage module loaded in the kernel:
lsmod | grep 'usb-storage'
If it's there, then the next best bet would be to disconnect the drive, and watch the system log:
tail -f /var/log/messages
or
tail -f /var/log/syslog
(you may have to be root to do this)
Then, plug the drive back in, and watch for the appropriate events. I'd show you an example, but I'm (unfortunately) in windows at the moment. It should say something about attaching the usb device.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Does anybody know how to install and mount a usb drive.
yes. oh. you want me to tell you how? :)
well, I'm going to assume that you're not using Gnome or KDE, or that someone else is going to tell you how to do it the easy way in gnome/kde, because i don't know that easy way...
so, the way i do it is, i go into a terminal, and run:
$ mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
now, before you go and type that into your shell, there are a few things
you should know. 1) the $ at the beginning is not something you want to type. it simply
means that you're doing this at a terminal prompt. 2) the folder /mnt/usb needs to exist
good luck :)
(p.s. sorry to pick on you a bit at the beginning... i just couldn't resist)
