Well, after trying all the fixes for my java 5 problem and following
several tutorials, something is still missing or wrong. I think I may
have messed things up by adding and editing and changing so much. I
don't believe there is a way to undo everything I have done, except
maybe wiping the whole system and starting over *shutter*, but without
Java 5 on here, I won't use it much. If anyone has any last option
ideas, I would welcome them before starting over.
Thanks,
Zak
If it comes down to re-installing, I'd reccomend considering SuSe. It
has a lot of proprietary stuff like Java already up and running without
the need to slog through all of this to get it working. You won't learn
as much, but you'll get your homework done, and at this point in the
semester, that's probably more important. SuSe DVD ISO's are freely
available from http://en.opensuse.org/Download . If you don't have a
DVD burner, you can come use one in my lab in 185 MCKB.(there's a little
note on that site that the free ftp iso is missing a few packages so it
can fit on a single layer DVD).
You could also consider the Ubuntu installation we were doing at the
installfest (ask somebody to bring CD's to the next meeting or meet you
somewhere with them). There is a tarball on uug.byu.edu/ubuntu.tgz
that should contain java and everything else you need, but so far this
method still requires more tweaks I don't have time to make during the
semester.
I know you want find many of the diehards around here pushing SuSe, but
if you become good with it, you could probably get a job down the street
from your experience. It certainly helped me pass CS 240.
