IFRI: Kosovo’s secession threatens Europe’s future

17. September 2008. 20:49

Kosovo’s secession has marked the end of the European ‘post-Cold War’
order, which threatens Europe’s future, underlines the annual report of
the French Institute for International Relations, presented today in
Paris. A part of Serbia’s territory has been amputated, states the
report of the influential French institute, adding that separatist
demands in Europe, as well as other continents, are becoming more
numerous. If one of the member states disintegrates, the future of the
EU will suffer a serious blow, assessed the IFRI, comparing the case of
Kosovo with Belgium, as well as other separatist movements in Europe.
Kosovo’s independence is not sustainable because the Serbian minority
does not recognize the authorities in Pristina, because the daily
survival of the new state depends on the outside world and because
Serbia does not recognize this new situation, the analysis assesses
adding that ‘Kosovo, which has never existed as a state, does not have
natural borders’. Kosovo is ‘independent’ today not as a result of a
thought out action of the EU, but because the US had unilaterally
decided this in 1999’, states the report of the IFRI.
