[32] Watchdog on Standing
---------------------------------

Lord Justice Taylor's report into the disaster said that "standing accommodation is
NOT intrinsically unsafe". He lay most of the blame for the disaster on poor crowd
control.

Weekend Watchdog spoke to Dr Jim Dickie, a consultant on the Government's Green guide
which sets the standard for stadium safety. Jim told Weekend Watchdog:

"There can be safe standing areas, undoubtedly. A properly designed standing terrace
which is effectively managed would provide adequate levels of safety."

Despite this and the wishes of Charlton to introduce safe standing areas, the Premier
League still hold their hands over their ears and go 'not listening'

But try and marry this quote from Chris Smith with the opening paragraph:

It is now eleven years since the Hillsborough tragedy. As a direct result of Lord
Justice Taylor's comprehensive report into the causes of the disaster, we now have the
safest football grounds in the world. The Government still believes that Taylor had
the last word on this issue. Safety must take precedence."

While they can roll over most teams in the Premiership, in Europe they are being found
out at the back too often, I suspect, for manager Alex Ferguson's liking. What they
retain, however, is the ability to keep going and turn a game in the last five or 10
minutes. How often over the years have we seen United score in the last five or 10
minutes as they did on Tuesday? It's not lucky, it's an in-bred, indomitable
will-to-win shared by all their players.

Hoolahoop must be green with envy non?

The Fa clowns were in fine form again having recieved this letter from Basil the dog:

Basil's letter read: "I wish to apply for the post of England team manager. Although I
am a dog I have a wealth of experience behind me."

And what did the FA top brass do - yep you guessed it:

"As I am sure you can appreciate, we have been inundated with applications and are
grateful for the interest and enthusiasm that the job has generated from people such
as yourself. Thank you for taking the time to write and for your interest in the
position."

Employ the dog I say!!

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claims that the rest of the Premiership give
Manchester United too much respect and "don't really have a go at them".

Wenger fired the latest shot in his psychological war with United boss Sir Alex
Ferguson by insisting too many teams have an inferiority complex. He said: "Everybody
in England, even the players who play against them, thinks that United will win."

Straight from the bitters quote book that one. Have you and Potato head got a bet on
who can moan the most!

[28] More from Hansen on the Ginger Prince

I don't think in the first two or three months of this season Scholes has been as good
as he was last year. But we are talking about very high standards here, the difference
between very good and unbelievably good.

That's your welcome in Murkeydive stuffed Alan.

The scouser with the alleged United supporting background joins the ginger fan club.

"He is up there in the top three with David Beckham. Yes, I rate him that highly. He
is on a par with Beckham for talent and ability. He has everything you would want from
an attacking midfield player."

"Technically, he's probably the most gifted player in the country. He has got superb
control with both feet, he is a fine passer, an outstanding finisher and can put his
foot into the tackle."

[27] Fergie - more UEFA involvement

Well someone needs to sort them out!

"I'll go to watch games, maybe join Uefa's study group. I'd really enjoy that because
you're talking about people who really care about the game having some input at Uefa.

"Somebody has got to make it possible for us to give back our knowledge to the game in
general."

"I think I'll have a position within the club which still has to be defined, but it's
got to be something where there is no result involved,"

"If there's a result involved, it triggers off a competitive element within me and I
don't want a situation to arise where a new manager comes in and I have to look over
his shoulder all the time.
"I've got to give him a chance."

I hope this buries the Edwards arguement of the 'Busby syndrome' once and for all

[25] Fergie - I want to go out at the top
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, November 24, 2000 by tb:
"I think there comes a point when you've had enough anyway,"

"Or the club thinks you've had enough, or the media think you've had enough, or the
public think you've had enough.

"Having been so successful during my period at Manchester United, I wouldn't want to
have a year when people start saying 'he should have quit'.

"I'd like to go out at the very top."

And what a way to finish - a potential Champions League final at Hampden Park
