Dan, The best place to start is the Newton Resources <http://www.chuma.org/newton/> which hosts the Newton FAQ and a lot more. You'll be amazed by what the Newton can do! There are some people running web servers from their Newton! For packages, the best place is the "United Network of Newton Archives" or UNNA at <http://www.unna.org/>. Finally, I hope you won't be offended by this, but the other great source of help and information is the NewtonTalk mailing list.
