Graham, Remove the front wheel, brake calipers, and fender from the forks. Do not remove the support between the forks yet. While the forks are in the clamps remove the caps on each fork. Then remove the top of the fork, sorry I don't know the part name, I think it was a 21mm socket to remove them. Remove the allen bolt in the bottom of one of the forks, have something right there to catch the oil in. After you have drained the oil out of both forks remove them from the clamps starting with the bottom clamp first. Take them to a bench and remove the support between the forks. Remove the black dust cover from the fork, then carefully remove the sponge material. Below that is a plastic washer that needs to be removed. Under the plastic washer is your snap ring. I used 90 degree angled pliers to remove the ring. Remove the spring in the fork, if you have not already. Now you pull up, and it may take some grunt, to get the seal to move up. then slide it off and install the new seal. If I remember correctly there is a pictorial on the nighthawk group page. To put them back together start with the allen bolt in the bottom then fill with oil. The bolt in the bottom connects the inner and outer pieces so compress the two tube together to make sure you get them the first time. After that it is a matter of reverse order of disassembly.
Have fun and happy wrenching. I am not sure where you are at, but would be willing to help if you are in the Portland area.
