I had this exact problem in my 85 650. After checking the the obvious
(battery etc.), it turned out to be a bad (burned) ignition switch connector
in the fuse box. I found by wiggeling the wires behind the fuse box and
suddenly the bike came back to life. This happened several time before I dug
into the fuse box to find the problem. Part of the problem was the throttle
cables are routed right behind the fuse box and they were pushing on the
connectors as the forks were turned.
