The problem can most likely be traced to Lucas, the supplier of electrical
controls for most British machines, including Jag and RR.  Before the end, it
was so bad that a switch could break on you taking it out of the box!!
I only worked on Brit cars for my boss (Triumph with an I-6 when I worked for
Ryder), and really good friends who knew the nature of the beast and understood
if it broke soon after fixing it.
I had a friend/neighbor with a Triumph M/C who asked me to work on his, and he
decided to wait when I told him about the electrical problems and that it would
be better to find parts off of a Jap bike that worked on his Bonneville.  Some
of his wires had fried...

Maintenance

Kind of related, but with bicycles.  My first time using clip-in pedals and
shoes, I pull up to a median on a bike/running path, with two gorgeous women
waiting for traffic to clear.  Of course, I forgot how to unclip from my
pedals,
and began the slowest low-speed fall you've ever seen on a bicycle, right at
their feet.  Oh and I'm wearing spandex.  Smooth.

I've heard of those electrical gremlins from old Brit bikes. This one seems
better than most on that count.
