Pirates normaly flew a friendly flag untill they got close, then would fly a 
black or red... One of the only remaining authentic pirate flags is on display 
at poirate soul in st. Augistine fl...

Same reason the pirates did it. Flying the skull and cross bones was a
shock tactic to make the crew of the other vessel have fight their own
nerves as well. That said the skull and cross bones was a relatively
rare flag to fly, despite what Hollywood would portray. A solid red
(blood) flag was more common. Penants of a country friendly to the
colors flown by the victim's vessel were a common deception as well. I
guess one of the founding Hell's Angels must have been a history buff
P-)
