Someone in Japan obviously did it in the '80's for a lot less than $1800. Technology should have made it cheaper today. I have a 700S with just 2500 miles on it. I bought it once I heard it running and haven't done anything to it yet. The paint is pristine but the rest (frame and engine 0 has weathered. That's one of my projects this winter. If I can't clean up the pipes and mufflers (I think the mufflers are good) but there's some rust on the exhausts then I'll have to decide whether to paint or do the best I can as they are. I have used one flat 1200 - 1500 degree paint that leaves an egg shell like sheen. If I still have it (I won't know till I use the paint again), I'll take note, Graham

HI Graham (and others),

Yes, looking for correct/stock restoration of the Black Chrome;
nothing else even comes close. I have been in the classic car
restoration thing for over 30 years, and there is no paint that is
gloss black, and will stand the heat of the header part of the
exhaust. ALL 1200 degree paints go on a flat black color, and many/
most/all will turn a lighter shade (looks grey) after the pipes get
hot. Many are cheap, and will peel off, especially if pipes are not
cleaned well enough. NEVER use primer, as primer does not have the
high heat resistance to not burn off, and thus will take the top coat
with it.

The place that I found that DOES do Black Chrome is in Nashville, TN
(I thought it was in NY, but I looked it up again), and their name is
NITROPLATE. The guy told me $1800.00, and they needed to be a pretty
nice set. They also cannot take out dings dents, and can only grind
out minor scuffs/scrapes.

I was told there may be a place in lower Michigan that does the Black
Chrome, but I haven't been able to find them yet (even asked one of
the fellow members on here, that lives in Michigan, and he didn't
know).

Maybe if we can have more people/members research this, someone will
get lucky and find a good source to have it done, without costing a
fortune. Put out the word,a nd let's see what we can find, and/or come
up with.
Thanks, Joe

I've used to different brands of high heat paint on exhausts. Some
work really well, others not so well. Joe, I know, would rather not
use paint. He's a purest when it comes to his 700S's, right Joe? I
would rather try and restore the black chrome but if I can't I'll
paint them - which will be part of my next project, Graham

I would suggest high temp black paint used in the automotive industry. It's application is specifically for parts that get over 1200 degrees.
You can buy it in any parts store. I would try it on some scrap part
first and see if the color is right. If not, look for another brand or
another type of black. I've seen matt blacks that look dark grey and
up to true black colors. HotrodMamma. Yes, it's me. Hi all! I miss
you.

I have never done it myself, so I cannot really tell, but I've

Powder coating doesn't typically work for exhausts; the

the coat melt and smooth is generally around 250-350F.

What about powder coating? seems to be much cheaper than that.
