did you check the plug wire's I used the clymer repair manuel and in that book the firing order is ALL WRONG !!!! I had the same problem your having I was firing on only two plugs and the bike would back fire bad.. I found out this by going on ( nighthawk-750.blogspot.com).check out this blog it help me I also have a 84 nighthawk 650..go luck.
