If you have a manual to give you a good idea of reassembly, go for it. If you have a great memory, go for it.
I can have a chain drive out, chain swapped and everything buttoned up in half an hour, sounds like the shaft isn't that much harder. I'll be personally finding out shortly, going to refresh grease, seals and brakes on the 650 as part of its resurrection.
