My 82 750 had stator problems also, dealer didnt replace it though.

The 650 82 was very lean ( start of the reduced pollution thing ) another reason for the long choke time. Also the stator was defective on all the 650's, went up in the first 8 to 10K miles. Replaced at the dealer at no charge. I Still own it and it still runs great.
