How about telling them you are saving up for a Harley and a good word in with
management might get you a raise that might get you over the top.

Thanks for all of the stories and commiseration! My biggest issue is that I
just started working here after being unemployed for two years, so I'm a little
pensive about giving it back to them (especially since one of the jerks is a
manager over me).

I was gonna say - I think this one boils down to technique - the lower
HP bike can simply dump the clutch and let the rear hook up - the guy
on the more powerful bike can't do that - he should be able to beat
that guy maybe not off the line, but certainly shortly there after.
However, if he's scared of the throttle - he might not be being
aggressive enough off the line and costing him the race. Also, if he
doesn't know his shift points, that will seriously affect his ability
to beat someone in a race.
My 450 used to be able to walk all over my Dad's Harley, but
that was a full dress touring bike vs a small lightweight bike. I had
him up until we got to speed.
What I've noticed is that when I ride with torque heavy
engines - usually V-twin cruisers - they have the advantage of
midrange roll on throttle response, where the inline engines need to
be downshifted in order to get the power.
I find it very annoying to ride with a group of V-twins for
that reason.
