I only have 200 miles on them but was told they should last about 6,000 to 8,000 miles.

Dennis Kirk, Bike Bandit, and Motorcycle Warehouse are all good sources for tires. If your rust problem is on the collectors where the headers meet the mufflers (common on Nighthawks), best solution I've found is a kit sold by Por15. It includes rust converter/cleaner and a heatproof silver top coat, both of which can be applied with a brush. Doesn't look like chrome, but cleans up the collectors to the point where that's barely noticeable. Don't have links handy to the sources above, but they're all easily Googled.
