And I can't stress reading a copy of "Proficient Motorcycling" it is under $10
new from amazon. They did a 2nd edition that has color pictures as well, and he
did a second book for more advanced riders called mastering the ride.

The most difficult thing for me to learn/accept , (still difficult!)  is that
it will tip in a turn to unbelievable angles (to me!)  without sliding out from
under me.  A friend says it helped him when he decided he would lay it down on
the low side and slide it before he went high-side or too little lean to stay
in his turn/lane.  A big thing for me was to realize that in a threatening
situation, you will go where you look:  if you look in the ditch or the other
lane, you will go there.  When entering a curve/turn, do not look closely in
front of the bike; look as far around the turn as you can see.  You will be
amazed at what this does for the “pucker factor” when the bike simply goes
where you are “thinking it”.  It will all get easier as you develop
(successful) experience and “muscle memory”.  Think back to learning to ride a
bicycle:  at first it wouldn’t stay upright and then your mind/muscles learned
what to do and it became almost impossible to tip it over.

Ride safe; have fun and keep the rubber side down!

Oh yea, stay relaxed. The bike will from time to time do things that don't feel
safe like when you get a wind gust from the side. Stay relaxed and don't tense
up and just go with it. Learning to trust your tires is a really hard part and
that only comes from riding. I've seen guys with years of owning a bike be
afraid to lean it because they never rode much. What happens when they get in a
bad spot is they panic and crash. There are 2 unbreakable rules to street bikes.
#1 always stay on the road and in your lane.
#2 ride the bike until you either get out of the situation or crash.

I say this because offroading is almost certainly a crash. If you come into a
corner too fast it is better to lean the bike into a low side if need be than
to hit the brakes and go off road potentially high siding. Also the longer you
can stay on the brakes before impact the less momentum you will have and you
lessen your chance os serious injury. Statistically speaking a biker who takes
the safety course and doesn't drink and ride is relatively safe, especially
after their 3rd year. Ride allot, take you time with learning. Don't trust cars
to see you or do what is right.

Hi All!

Got my temps, insurance, tags today.  I practiced starting and stopping, figure
eights, turns, starting on hill (and because of stalling it multiple times
while learning to use the clutch, got a crash course in popping the clutch).
I have two big things to keep working on, using both front and back break and
getting it to neutral on the first try.

I plan to spend another day or two in the parking lot, then get on side roads
and figure out how to remember to use my turn signals, mirrors and interact
with traffic.

Give me your top three things to get down right away to save my hide.
