Kurt, the reason is the orientation of the bands in the tires. On a bias
ply the threads are arranged in an x pattern which distributes the load
over a larger section of the rim. On a radial tire the bands are in +
pattern with the sidewall bands at a 90 degree angle to the rim. This
places load from say hitting a pothole directly to the rim over a small
area. I wondered it myself and got that info from one of the tire
manufacturers website.
