Ehhh... I suppose that might contribute, but... I'm not convinced the
difference is that great. The plies in both are essentially fabric (nylon
or poly); they don't provide any sort of compressive strength, like you'd
need in an impact situation. The plies are there for their tension
strength, to keep the tire in proper shape under inflation and during
deformation incidents. A nylon layer isn't going to transfer much energy
along its axis to the rim, not compared to the air pressure in the tire
itself.

I guess I just think that it's an overstated risk, at the end of the day.
