I follow the same sort of procedure (moving to one edge of the lane, looking the mirrors, etc). The problem I have is that I am not sure that I will be able to reach fast enough. The second time I got read-ended, and I was sitting on a red light. I looked at mirror and this guy was clearly coming too fast and not paying attention. I realized he will hit me probably just a second before it happened. I only had time to release the brake and before I could do anything else it was too late. But I totally agree, I am afraid of pissing of the wrong person by splitting lanes.
I still highly recommend moving to one side of the your lane while stopped, almost as it you will be about to split. This way, even if you still get impacted from behind, you won't be squeezed between the two cars. Everyone, please be safe out there.
