I lived in Japan for a long time. In Tokyo, all bikes go to the front under 
the traffic light, either along the curb or down the middle. It's standard 
operating procedure, and everyone accepts and expects it. 

It wasn't easy to keep behind the cages for me when I first moved back 
here, though now I'm used to it. Still, I would feel a lot safer up in 
front than in back watching my mirror.

I've also been known to pass miles and miles of bumper to bumper traffic 
down the side of the road on the berm, but that was the good old days. 
Again, over there it was considered normal.

In Japan, people carry neither guns nor chips on their shoulders. But don't 
get me started...
