David, Look on youtube for a video about repairing plastic stuff like this on a motorcycle. It's fairly easy and I even tried it successfully enough on my ST1100. If I have time I'll see if I can find the video. Having said that my side panels are both missing the bottom post thing your talking aobut and one of the rear tabs. Have been for about 40,000 miles and as long as I make sure they're secure I haven't lost one.
