Hey Eddie
I have a 83 hawk and ended up getting the stator rewound because it was
putting out voltage but not enough. Hopefully you have a muitimeter. On
the left side, remove the cover and take apart the connector from the
alternator. Set your mutimeter to OHM setting, check each of the three
yellow wires with one probe on the yellow, the other a good ground (bike is
not running, key is off) The meter reading should not change from the
number ONE that first comes on at the ohm's setting before you test the
wire. If it does, or goes to zero, then you have a short in the alternator
in that one section. No short, then carry on with the multimeter and the
ohm's setting to check between two yellow wires, switch around so all 3
wires are checked for ohms against another yellow wire. Readings should be
0.4 to 0.6 ohms. If not then your stator is getting weak (mine was) and
will need replaced. Lastly measure ohms between black and white stator
wires. It should read 4 to 6 ohms. If not, well you guessed it, your
stator is bad.

Let us know if the alternator checks out and we'll go deeper into this.
FYI make sure your battery is actually able to hold a full charge and the
connections are clean and tight. Your fully charged (with a portable
charger) battery should be 12.6 volts after sitting several hours when
charging is finished. I assume you have checked the fluid level in the
battery and if needed it's been topped up with distilled water.

Cheers, Lar
