I saw a guy once who used a swivel socket and just welded the back end of one to his driveshaft, not caring about the splines and such. But the U-joint is actually fairly beefy and obviously designed for the load. http://www.evalbum.com/2057 <-- Pics you can click along the right. I mean, if that's what I want to do, I could just weld up any shaft to any other shaft. Which I'm also tempted to do. But it's a drive component and I'm a crappy welder, so I worry about it being brittle (hardened shaft) and shattering.
