The 70-300 already as a minimum fstop of F5.6 at 300mm. F5.6 is the autofocus
threshold for CCD based AF sensors like the Nikon bodies use. Any lens that is
"slower" than F5.6 cannot autofocus.

The Nikon TC's don't support autofocus except for the ones that only work with
the expensive AF-I and AF-S lenses (TC14-E and TC20-E I think are the models).

If you are willing to give up AF, then you can use a 2X TC to turn that lens
into a 140-600 F8-F11 lens.

The Kenko and Tamron AF-TC's will AF with fast lenses like the 80-200 F2.8 D
which is what I use. There is a noticeable fall off in sharpness and AF
performance, but it works. My photos are sharp enough for newspaper work and
probably up to 8x10 enlargements.

I would think the Nikon TCs would be a bit sharper. I'm using the Kenko 7
element 2x and have gotten quite a bit of use out of it.
