Dear Roger.

If your grand daughter is less then one year old, I would suggest even a
50mm f1.4 for available light.  I have been using: 50mm f1.4, and 100mm
f2.5 for portrait of my son.  As he got older, I have found that the longer
lens is better as I would not distract him by being too near.  

I seldom use flash since he has sensitive eyes.

I have used Kodak EGP 400 with very good results.
