The PC Nikkor should have some visible lubricant but not more than a very light
coating. That is the way the several PC lenses I have owned over the years have been.

Metering should be done BEFORE the lens is shifted as you have suggested. This is
true when using all Nikon bodies EXCEPT the F3 which will meter correctly after the
lens is shifted. That is one of the several reasons I still use the F3 for some of my
work; it is an ideal body for the PC lens and for other work where average metering is
desired when using other than the eyelevel prism finder.

The PC Nikkors are fine lenses but remember to set the diaphragm before taking the
exposure. It is back to the preset diaphragms of 30 years ago...

Subject: 35mm PC Nikkor Lens? [19]

1) I just picked up a 35mm PC Nikkor Lens in excellent condition. This lens
seemed to have an excess amount of lubricant between the mating surfaces
where the lens shifts. Is this normal or has someone gunked up this lens?

2) I didn't get an instruction sheet with this lens. I have heard that you
shouldn't attempt to meter with the lens shifted. Is this correct?
