I would be willing to bet that Minolta is paying for the use of that patent. To use 
the patent of another you must have their permission and as a rule they want money for 
the use of said patent. If they wanted to be an a**hole they can deny you permission 
to use their patent no matter how much you are willing to pay.
The really strange thing here (as another poster pointed out) is that Nikon and Canon 
are both owned by the same company!

I attended the Nikon school a couple of years ago and the Nikon service reps brought a 
table full of the newest Nikon goodies and for about 5 minutes (under the watchful eye 
of a service rep) I got to play with the F4 and DA20 finder with the 20-35mm AF Nikon 
zoom and it was FANTASTIC!!! I have dreamed of having that
camera and finder to do all my macro work. Maybe one day I will save enough money. 
Just by chance does anybody want to talk about trading a mint N90s with MB-10 and 
MF-26 data back for an F4?
