Nikon "Pro Digital SLR" creates a stir Nikon's announcement early last week of a "Pro Digital SLR" developed exclusively by Nikon is creating significant industry buzz, even before the other new digital Nikon, the F5-based Kodak DCS 620, is shipping. Photographers attending PMA in Las Vegas have filled my mailbox with information on the new camera gleaned from sources at the show. Sifting through this information, here's what I've learned: * The camera will be between US$5000 and US$13,000 * It will record images at anywhere from 3 to 8 fps * It will be smaller and lighter than an F100, or heavier than an F5 * It will use current SB series TTL strobes or it will use a brand new strobe not yet released * It will have a FireWire connector or it will have a USB connector or it will have a SCSI connector * It will take CompactFlash cards only or it will take Type II PC Cards only Put another way, the information coming out so far is still at the wild rumour stage, which is to be expected since its release is perhaps 7 or more months away and it's likely that certain aspects of the camera are in the final stages of development.
