Mark wrote about Nikon vs. Canon sales volumes at Broadway Camera in
Toronto. Nice data points (and some insight into F5 vs. F100), but I
thought I'd weigh in with an observation:

Camera stores tend to have a skewed following. If a store is
well-stocked with Nikon, and staffed with enthusiastic, knowledgable
Nikon owners, then they sell a lot of Nikon. The same is true of
Canon. Very few stores do both (N and C) equally well.

I sold cameras to work my way through college, and that's what I
observed. At the entry level (or trade-up level), the customer is
strongly influenced by what the salesman shoots with. This isn't true
for everybody, of course, but it happens. At the advanced amateur /
enthusiast level, the customer will seek out depth of stock, product
knowledge, and lack of "attitude".

Now I'm curious what the industry-wide sales figures are (not that it
would influence my buying decisions, just curious).
