Since I brought up Moose's comments on the N90s let me add a few more
of my own. First, I agree that the best advice is from people on
lists such as this and photographers that we personally know. People
who are paid to endorse a product are always suspect, I don't care who
they are and how honest they attempt to be. Paid endorsements are
inherently suspicious. That said I am not questioning the integrity
of Moose, George, Galen or any other pro. My self interest simply
requires me to be careful.
Moose's reason for blasting the N90s at this time was apparently
caused by a number of e-mail requests to compare the F100 with the
N90s. As you may know Moose has a good comparison of the F100 and F5
on his site. I guess he got tired of all the requests and decided to
end them by saying that he did not like the N90s and would not do such
a comparison. Personally, I don't blame him. He did not detail the
reasons for no liking the N90s but I suspect it had to do with the
lack of multiple selected focusing points, motor drive speed, shutter
durability and other points. Despite his endorsement of Nikon and
Tokina he seems to have always maintained the philosphy that it is the
photographer that matters most, and that other things (like spending
money to get to photographable places) make more sense than simply
buying more equipment.
Finally, let me say that whenever I have e-mailed him with a question
I have always recieved a respectful reply even if it was an "I don't
know".
