Or possibly the operator!  :)  Your lens is a variable f stop zoom lens.
As you zoom from 28mm to 85mm the f stop changes from f/3.5 to f/4.5.
This is almost one stop (actually 3/4 stop).  The mechanical aperture ring
obviously cannot change during zooming but the camera's electronic aperture
readout does reflect this change.  So, if you set your lens to f/8 at or
close to the 28mm focal length and then zoom toward 85mm at some point the
viewfinder display will change to f/11 and vis-a-versa.  If you set your
lens to f/8 at or close to the 85mm focal length and zoom to 28mm at some
point the viewfinder display will change to f/5.6.  This is all normal if
these changes occurred as a result of zooming.  If you experienced this
problem and you didn't zoom the lens, I have no idea what the problem is.
