Mark,

This sounds like the infamous MF-26 reset.  Even momentary loss of contact 
causes the MF-26 to reset to its original dates.  There have been several 
postings about this.

Cold weather is a frequent cause suggesting a thermal expansion issue is 
involved in some occurrences. (Were you outside and was it cooler than the 
camera usually is kept?) 

There are a couple solutions to this..

1.  Try tightening the screw holding the battery door.  Last fall I'd 
replaced the batteries when they'd run out (as evidenced by the flashing 
display).  While shooting in a winter storm, it reset 3-4 times.  
Tightening the screw on the door took care of it.
2.  Mel Hughes has suggested... get a sheet of closed cell foam that was 
relatively thin, and cut two small, battery sized pieces.  Insert these 
behind the electrical contacts in the MF26, insuring constant contact with 
the battery. 
3.  Others have just bent the contacts a bit.
