As for Japanese, Word (ordinary "English" type) handles it fine, but you have to "register" it with Japanese using the Microsoft Language Register, an app that comes with Word. Then, to get the regular Word back, you have to re-register with English again. Gets to be rather a bother. When I want to avoid all this, I use NeoOfficeJ, which is free.
