It has been known to cause rows, sleepless nights and
even end in separate rooms and a ruined sex life. Snoring has long been
an underestimated symptom of ill-health, often dismissed as a bad habit
or just laughed off in jest. However, latest research suggests that
millions of snorers across the world may be doing serious harm to their
health and that of the people they sleep next to.

British
scientists discovered night-time noise to be raising blood pressure
even when you're asleep – thereby increasing the risk of heart disease,
stroke, kidney disease and dementia.

Also, a nasal racket can actually reach 90 decibels, the equivalent of a
passing train.

Snorers themselves can also suffer raised cholesterol, palpitations, headaches,
nausea and gastrointestinal problems.

Here’s how to beat it...

BE AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT
If you have a 16-inch collar or above, you may lack the muscle tone needed to
keep your airway open.

STAY OFF THE BOOZE
It causes nasal irritation, increasing airway resistance.

DON’T SMOKE BEFORE BED
This irritates the lining of the nasal cavity and throat, causing swelling and
catarrh.

KEEP AIRWAYS OPEN
Ease congestion with herbal spray or try nasal dilators. Sleeping open-mouthed
increases the problem.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS, SEE YOUR GP
They
may suggest a 'Continuous Positive Airway Pressure unit' which is
basically a mask and machine to keep airways open. If that doesn't
work, surgery can remove some of the soft tissue in the throat.
