>From the reports I've read, you can do gigabit on cat5, but there is a
tendency to drop a lot of packets that way. When I set up my gigabit
network, I used cat6, but I have never tested to verify the packet loss on
cat5. Other than that, cat5 and cat6 work exactly the same, use the same
plugs, etc.

When I set up that gigabit network, I accidentally got plugs that did not
have the little grooves that help guide the individual wires in place. It
was an absolute nightmare getting them to work, and in the end I went to a
local hardware store and purchased better plugs at some crazy price. I'll
never make that mistake again!
