Hey Members,

It's upon the intention what NLUG can be or wants to be. I was satisfied with
the current setup (which is I think the category when "geeks get together and
educate each other"), but it's fine if it tries to grow somewhere.

I'm involved in other user's group too. I'm co-founder of the Java UG. We are
without any budget, and we don't want to touch any money at this point (maybe
this will change). We don't even have a roaster! We even had to turn down some
presenters, who wanted funding for their hotel stay. Whoever wants to present
should fund their stay too. Despite of that we grow pretty much. Our first 3
meetings (2010 Sept-November) were in the MRB III actually, but with very few
attendants. Now VACO sponsors us with the meeting place and food. Parking is
better in Brentwood than at Vanderbilt so I let this change although it may be
not ideal for me, I won't bike to Brentwood. But if NLUG wants to go that way
and have food too, you can go to VACO, it sponsors other user's groups too, and
they are not intrusive at all.

On the other hand I'm also involved with the .NET UG. Our current president is
forming some kind of non-profit organization. As a secretary I had to
contribute my CV for that goal. You can contact David Neal about the details
(what kind of organization is going on, etc. I don't know anything about the
details), maybe sharing some experiences and ideas can help. You shouldn't have
any preconception because it's a .NET UG, many programmers use open source
technologies, and actually lot's of their setup is rather like UNIX than
Windows (vim, VS with NuGet and Ivy, etc).

Let me know if you need help with contacting David Neal.

At the very least, NLUG needs $20/year to file its annual report with
the state, in order to remain a corporation. I don't know of any
other mandatory costs. Since I run another nonprofit in the city
(Nashville 2600), I'm in a position to know what the barebones costs
are.

This is excluding the filing you should be doing with the charitable
solitiations and gaming board.
Also there are federal requirements. I am assuming you file your own 990.

If NLUG became a non profit again, it would probably behoove this organization
to network with the
center for non profit management. There might be cross training
opportunities/open source outreach
potential there.

In the past, NLUG has done a run of Tshirts/polos. That is another
possibility, if people would like to have NLUG-branded clothing to
wear about the community. (Excess above cost goes back to the
corporation.) Howard has a good resource for embroidered polos.

This is a good idea. I might need to talk to howard about embroidery for my non
profit/public charity in madison,tn.
