Openstack essentially abstracts the underlying virtualization such that from 
the standardized tools, you don't know what is there, it just works.

In the 2 private ones I made, I am using kvm underneath, but vmware, azure, xen 
and others are options.

The applications don't need to be coupled to the cloud, just the idea about 
what infrastructure you could make in the cloud.
