I guess it is \dorecurse. What happens with the column balance can be explained by Hans. It seems to be related to the linenotes on the right. I addressed the issue in a separate thread (https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2016/085544.html), but Hans may be busy with other things. \dorecurse only avoids copying the same text again and again.
