Can you start ntop with -t 5 and then check the log file for all ntop startup 
messages; you should see it start at least 3 threads for name resolution.  
Also, maybe try running as root instead of user "ntop" - perhaps it's a 
permissions issue somewhere.

Yes, it can. I checked this twice.

The pinga name resolution works ok.
