   Thanks, i'll give this a try.  I did not find any errors in the event log
but this server has a high connection volume.  It seems to hang either early
in the morining, users connecting for the work day, or late afternoon, not
sure what the users are doing then.  Server has not crashed since yesterday
morning, a new record 8^)

You know, as strange as this sounds I had a problem similar if not exactly
to this and found a fix. The machine kept tanking, and I noticed it seemed
to just get confused but this registry entry fixed the machine and it's been
rock solid ever since. 

What I found was that the server was running out of interrupt request
packets (IRP's); the default value is 6 and that just seems to be too low if
the connection volume for the machine is high. Check your event log and look
for IRPSTACKSIZE errors. My server is a high-end HP net server [W2K OS] that
does bit serving for our technical engineering windows-based apps and the
user volume is 150-200 connections a day, 24 hrs a day, from all global
sites in our company. 

Okay the fix is to increase the IRPSTACKSIZE buffer, using the registry
editor. Here's the path:
HkeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters 
So, create a New Dword value with the name IRPStackSize set the value to 11

Esteemed Colleagues,

   I have a Compaq Proliant 3000 server with a Pentium II 333 Mhz CPU and
128 Mb Ram running NT4.0 SP5.  Access to file and print services has
recently started hanging...on a daily basis.  When the services hang I can't
even log into the server or connect in any way using naming services.  It
has to be manually powered off to reboot.  There are no traces of any
problems in the logs.  No evidence of Dr. Watson.

I'm Stumped and at a loss of what to even look for in Technet or the
archives.  Very baffling.
