to do raid on professional/workstation/?xp pro or home? I'd use a hardware raid controller.  I don't think "professional" supports software raid.  Look for one with lots of memory, good performance, hotswappability (is that a word?), support for spare drives, no changes to the OS or disk manager, or some combination of the previous.

just make a repair disk set with the disk drivers on it, then test to make sure you can boot off the floppyset.

I've used raid controllers from HP, IBM and Adaptec (I think),  and had good success.  They'll usually do raid1, 5 and 10.  some have raid 15 mirrored striped (also known as plaid).  The more expensive (read server) cards come with more cache, and better managment software.  The cheaper ones (usually) have no hot swap, and more basic config and management.

I've mostly done mirror for the system and boot volume, then a stripe set for data/apps volume.  From what I understand it's better not to cache SQL server as it does it's own caching and performance tuning, and for data and transaction security in case of power failure.

Of course that all depends on what apps you are running that need raid.

And here I thought this was a fairly simple question....lol

Win2k Pro doesn't support software raid so I can only assume that XP doesn't also. I was hoping some of you beta guys could substantiate this for me.

Now, you must be kidding?  Win2K Pro, NT4 Workstation, do NOT support raid.  Don't know about XP, but I would assume the same.

Did you mean your comments as a joke, Benjamin?

I hope this was meant as some kind of joke. Being an MCSE and Support Specialist you should know that Winxp PRO does in fact have RAID-1 much like Win2k PRO has it, and WINNT4.0 has it..

Again Sean, it does support software raid1, I am using it on XP RC2 -2526 and XP 2565? or whatever their full version is

Good Luck

XP does not support it, but Windows 2002 Server (Advanced, Datacenter, etc.) will.

I'm somewhat familiar with the Pro's and Con's, but thanks for the info :o) I also know the procedure for disk mirroring, I just needed to know if XP supports it as W2k Pro does not.

Thanks again!

Warning: If you want disk mirroring (or any software RAID under W2K) you HAVE to use dynamic disks, and once they're dynamic there's NO going back.  Your familiar disk utilities may no longer work, and you have now forsaken partitions for volumes.  Good luck. ;)

Fire up Computer Management (from Administrative Tools, or right-click on My Computer and pick Manage), and click on Disk Management.  In turn, right click on the hard drives you want to mirror and select "Upgrade to Dynamic Disk...".  Once your disks are dynamic, right click on the simple volume you want to mirror, select "Add Mirror..." and follow the wizard.  Remember that you can only mirror simple volumes, not a spanned volume or similar.
