My father went down the line of a refurbished iPhone 4 with the Straight Talk plan. Making the change to put it on the new carrier did not require me to unlock the phone.
Thus far, he's been extremely happy with the service. He doesn't use heavy internet (say, Netflix) on Straight Talk, but he does use it for emails, iMessage texting and some web browsing. The guide we had to do the conversion for the phone noted the following: The official tag line is that the internet is "unlimited". The unofficial line is that after about 100 megs or so, they will start rate limiting you. This wasn't a problem for my father's planned use of the phone.
