Tom, Being an owner of the business I understand where your CEO is coming from. I always reserve the right to override the system, but I rarely do so because of the message that it sends to my employees.
Saying that...I always welcome input from my employees in a respectful considerate tone. They always have a voice and an open door to come see me directly, but I encourage to have it come up the chain. They know I won't always act on it, but they know their opinion is heard. My advice... Nothing too formal, simply draft an email or letter stating that, "I apologize for overstepping my bounds. In my zeal to ensure the protection of the network and stability of the systems that I have been hired to insure I overstepped my authority. I would be happy to remove your system from the AV policy the rest of the computers are in, and install some other software more to your liking. Let me know how I can be of assistance." Give it to your supervisor and ask it to go up the chain. If that came to me, unless I was a total bastard, all would be forgiven and I would probably at least reevaluate my position or at least offer why I chose not to follow what everyone else was doing. I've almost lost my job because of it. In trying to defend/protect our network and the files the users work with daily, we had implemented some new antivirus software that he did not like. Our CEO is quite smart when it comes to technology however, he has stated to my upper managers he does not like to be controlled or protected to the point he cannot override the system. I've been instructed to leave his laptop alone, which connects to our network almost daily, or face loosing my job. So what do you do in THAT situation?? My upper managers will not stand up to the CEO and defend my position to protect the network??? I'm curious to see how others would handle that.
