Corning-Siecor has a system, Unicam for ST, SC, LC, MTRJ and FC
connectors that doesn't require polishing which is the toughest part of
installing fiber ends.
We've used it here for ST ends and it works great.
For a one time deal, I wouldn't think purchasing the tools would be cost
effective but if you would use it 3 or more times, then I'd guess it
would be a good investment.
Our local electronics supply house carries all the tools and ends. I'm
sure with all the fiber runs we have on campus, we've saved tons of
money doing it ourselves.

Running your own fiber isn't like pulling Cat5, the ends have to be cut
and polished with special tools, this is something you contract
out......

I have never worked with fiber before. Can anyone recommend a solution
that
would get me the 1Gb fiber from the second floor to the third floor in
the
most frugal way? Running a fiber optic cable is the same as running a
CAT5
but I just cant bend it very tight right?

James
