I only buy memory from the manufacturer when I absolutely have to.

I usually keep enough manufacturer RAM (which is increasingly turning out to
be other RAM with a markup) on hand to avoid the "hey, that wasn't my RAM,
so I'm not supporting this system" issue.

In fact, because Dell pretty much outsources their onsite support to other
organizations, most of the time the non-Dell memory issue is a complete
non-issue because those techs don't care either.
