Note it's not just pinout... it's protocol.

 

If you have a cable that simply re-packages the USB protocol in to a
RJ45 physical connection (your APC's?), it won't work with another
device that is expecting a serial protocol.

 

The USB-to-serial dongles actually have active electronics in them that
are translating the protocol...they aren't just "connector converter
cables", such as some devices (ciscos) that have a serial port that
requires a simple cable with RJ45 at one end and DB9 at the other...
