Customer base and mindshare are certainly a big part of this, I think. The perception is, Netmeeting (or MSN Messenger) is old and busted, Skype is the new hotness. Whether or not that's an accurate analysis of the technology is irrelevant; that's the perception. That said, I don't know that they'd spend 8 gigabucks solely for marketing.
