Although I have never personally had the occasion to use the PowerPrint
software, the understanding I always had of it was that the software
consisted only of the printer drivers (which Linux would also provide),
and that the serial-to-parallel protocol conversion was done entirely in
the cable. The USB version of the cable (or functional equivalent) is
still being sold by itself in electronics stores. I do believe that was at
one point true of serial versions as well, both Mac- and PC-serial. This
is the first I've heard of a FireWire version. Assuming that serial
support works decently now in the NuBus kernels, the serial-to-parallel
cable should work fine under Linux once you figure out the correct serial
settings the PowerPrint software uses for the cable, unless this cable
attempts to send a clock signal to the Mac, which Linux does not support.
This is not something that may be determined by examining the cable, but
only either by trial and error, or by monitoring the behavior of the
PowerPrint software.
