I'm with Matt on the importance of the mailing list. Web-based forums are fine, but they require people to repeatedly come in and check what's happening. Being on this list means I get notified on my phone the second someone posts. It's a very different dynamic, and it never precludes generating slower-moving content (like forums, blogs, wikis etc). for anyone who doesn't want the interruptions, the digests and archives do the job.
I still think that Matt's original proposal is best for now. If [nupic] can't be the name, then [nupic-discuss] or [nupic-general] it'll have to be. The code-specific stuff should be split off into [nupic-hackers] (it's just a cooler name than [nupic-dev]). I don't think that -theory is worth splitting off yet, because everyone is interested in the theory, newcomers especially, and asking them to subscribe to yet another mailing list is unnecessary. I would like the general [nupic*] list to always be about the theory, and never to have a [nupic-theory] list. We've done really well with this list so far (there hasn't been one fight!) and we've been mixing up loads of topics. Matt's proposal is to take the code-specific stuff out to the [nupic-hackers] list so we can channel our attention on that or everything else. Let's agree on that and then see how the next evolutions unfold.
